We recently had the opportunity to put a prototype of the upcoming 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric through its paces, specifically focusing on its real-world range. This wasn't your average jaunt around town; we aimed to simulate a typical road trip to see just how far this electric SUV could go on a single charge.

The test vehicle, while heavily camouflaged and stripped of identifying badges, gave us a solid preview of what's to come. Riding on Pirelli P Zero tires (275/45R21 front, 315/40R21 rear), we embarked on a journey to evaluate its battery performance. Lacking our usual GPS equipment, we relied on the vehicle's odometer for distance measurements.

Our adventure began with a fully charged battery, boasting a gross capacity of 113 kWh (108 kWh usable). We set the tire pressures to the recommended levels and with a Porsche engineer on board, we hit the road. The route was primarily highway, and we utilized the Cayenne's adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist whenever possible. The cabin temperature was maintained at a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and we held a steady 70 mph for the majority of the test.

After navigating through initial city traffic, we merged onto the interstate. The Cayenne's integrated navigation system guided us, incorporating a round trip to our starting point. The vehicle intelligently factors in past driving habits, current traffic conditions, temperature, wind speed, elevation changes, and other data to continuously refine its range predictions and state-of-charge (SOC) estimates.

Initially, the range prediction seemed a bit optimistic. Given that the first leg of our journey involved a significant elevation gain, we expected the system to account for this. However, as we progressed, the projected range adjusted dynamically. It's important to note that the Cayenne Electric's range prediction considers multiple factors beyond simple driving history.

During the return leg, which was predominantly downhill, the range prediction initially took a surprising dip, even suggesting we might arrive with a negative SOC. Despite double-checking for traffic delays and even inquiring about the impact of headwinds, the reasons for this initial pessimistic forecast remained unclear.

As the range prediction dwindled, the dashboard display turned yellow, signaling the low battery state. Unlike some EVs that resort to alarmist warnings, the Cayenne continued to provide precise range and SOC information.

Toward the end of our journey, as we descended the grade we had previously climbed, the range prediction rebounded, adding to the mystery of why the system hadn't accounted for this earlier.

In the end, we achieved a total distance of 350.7 miles, concluding with 2% SOC remaining. Our average efficiency was 3.4 miles per kWh.
