Honda Pilot & Odyssey Face Safety Investigations

Honda Pilot & Odyssey Face Safety Investigations

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating potential safety flaws in certain Honda models, specifically the Pilot SUV and Odyssey minivan. These investigations, involving a significant number of vehicles, raise concerns about passenger safety and could lead to future recalls.

Pilot's Faulty Seatbelt Monitoring System

The investigation into the 2023-2024 Honda Pilot centers around a potentially flawed seatbelt monitoring system in the second and third rows. The system may incorrectly indicate whether rear passengers are buckled, presenting a significant safety risk. This inaccurate reporting can be especially problematic, as drivers often have limited visibility to confirm seatbelt use visually, particularly with young children in the back. The potential for distraction caused by the need to constantly check on rear passengers could also increase the risk of accidents. While the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received a limited number of complaints, the nature of the potential defect warrants further investigation.

Odyssey's Airbag Deployment Sensitivity

The 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey is under investigation for a separate issue: the potential for unintended deployment of the rear curtain and side airbags. According to reports, these airbags may activate when the vehicle encounters bumps or potholes. Unnecessary airbag deployment can cause injuries, as the force of an airbag is substantial. Furthermore, the loud noise and sudden impact can startle the driver, leading to a loss of control and a possible collision. The ODI has received multiple complaints regarding this issue, including at least one early warning report indicating injury.

What Owners Should Know

While no official recalls have been issued at this time, owners of the affected vehicles—specifically the 2023-24 Pilot and the 2018-22 Odyssey—should be aware of these ongoing investigations. It is hoped that the potential problems are limited in scope. However, it is recommended to stay informed about any future developments, and be vigilant about rear passenger safety. If Honda identifies systemic issues, a recall and subsequent repair program would likely be implemented to address these concerns.
