However, the AT4 trim itself presents a significant drawback. GMC's AT4 badge signifies off-road readiness, but applying it to a vehicle as massive as the Sierra EV results in compromises that undermine an otherwise remarkable electric truck.

The core issue lies in the Sierra EV AT4's suspension. It requires a more sophisticated setup to effectively absorb and manage rough terrain. This is exacerbated by its considerable weight of 8,844 pounds. Controlling such a substantial mass is a challenge, and the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 falls short in this regard.

This limitation becomes evident during emergency braking scenarios. A panic stop from 60 mph requires 145 feet, accompanied by noticeable front-to-back bucking. This is primarily attributed to the softer suspension, lacking sufficient damping control to prevent excessive spring movement. The truck's handling also suffers during cornering, with the tall sidewalls of the Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires (LT285/75R18, nearly 35 inches in diameter) contributing to body roll and tire roar as they struggle to maintain grip.

Off-road performance is equally disappointing. Even on a relatively mild path of loose rocks and pebbles, the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 struggled, frequently finding itself bogged down – a scenario that wouldn't typically challenge a GMC-badged AT4. While many pickup owners, particularly early EV adopters, may only venture as far as well-maintained dirt roads leading to trailheads, the 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4's capabilities might be overkill for them, and they might be better served by a more suitable alternative.

Standout Features

While engaging Max Power mode from a standstill might not deliver an overwhelming surge, expect some noticeable torque steer. Nevertheless, the truck accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 4.3 seconds, a notable feat for a vehicle weighing nearly 9,000 pounds. Merging onto highways or passing slower vehicles presents no challenge.

On the highway, the Sierra EV AT4 demonstrates impressive endurance. In a MotorTrend Road Trip Range test, it achieved 368 miles on a single charge, going from 100% to 5% at a steady 70 mph. Although this figure falls short of the EPA's 478-mile rating, it remains commendable given the truck's weight. When recharging, testing revealed that a 15-minute session on a 350-kW DC fast charger could add 120 miles of range, with an additional 15 minutes providing another 93 miles (totaling 213 miles).

Price Point

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4's $91,695 base price is a significant consideration. The tested vehicle, equipped with an optional hard-folding bed cover, had a final price of $93,645. While full-size truck prices seem to have no upper limit these days, this remains a substantial investment. While the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 offers numerous advantages, there are more capable off-road vehicles available at a lower cost, though most of these alternatives still rely on gasoline.
