Saks Global Files Bankruptcy, Leadership Shakeup

The parent company of luxury retailers Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off Fifth has initiated a significant corporate restructuring, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announcing a shake-up in its executive leadership. This move has prompted customer speculation about potential further store closures in the coming months.

The filings were submitted in mid-January, with the company simultaneously securing a $1.75 billion financial package aimed at stabilizing its future. This infusion includes $1.5 billion from existing senior secured bondholders and a $240 million loan from asset-based lenders. Company statements indicate these funds will support ongoing operations and strategic turnaround efforts, with an additional $500 million commitment from bondholders expected later this year.

In a related press release, the corporation noted it is currently "evaluating its operational footprint to invest resources where it has the greatest long-term potential." While no new closures for the flagship Saks Fifth Avenue chain have been confirmed, the off-price Saks Off Fifth division had previously identified nine locations for shutdown in early November.

Recent Leadership Appointments at Saks Global

The bankruptcy proceedings coincide with another shift in the company's executive suite. Following the departure of CEO Marc Metrick earlier in January, and a brief period where Chairman Richard Baker assumed the role, a new chief executive has been named.

Geoffroy van Raemdonck, the former head of Neiman Marcus Group, has been appointed CEO effective immediately. Raemdonck intends to expand the leadership team by bringing in several former Neiman Marcus executives to fill key positions, including president and chief commercial officer.

Confirmed Saks Off Fifth Store Closures

As part of its strategy to optimize its physical store portfolio, Saks Off Fifth confirmed the closure of several underperforming locations late last year. The company stated this would allow a sharper focus on high-performing and high-potential stores.

The following Saks Off Fifth stores are slated to close:

  • Austin, Texas
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • East Hanover, New Jersey
  • Franklin Mall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Niagara Falls, New York
  • Pittsburgh North (McKnight Road), Pennsylvania
  • Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania
  • Washington, DC
  • West Hartford, Connecticut

Currently, the Saks Off Fifth website lists approximately 100 stores across the United States and Canada, while Saks Fifth Avenue maintains 41 locations in North America.

Understanding the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Process

The recent filings were made under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, a legal mechanism typically used by businesses to reorganize their debts and obligations while continuing daily operations. According to court documents, the Saks Global entities estimate they have between 10,000 and 25,000 creditors.

The company reports estimated assets valued between $1 billion and $10 billion. Liability estimates presented in the filings vary, with one document indicating liabilities between $1 billion and $10 billion, and another citing liabilities exceeding $10 million. This restructuring process is designed to allow the company to manage its debts and position itself for long-term viability.
